Thus while the average rainfall during the last 10 years for the six months from November to April was 17.23 inches the rainfall for the same six months in 1893-94 was only 4.305 inches or less than one fourth; and in February and March the air was much drier than the average.

Moreover in the above defined district in Yunnan the winter months are very dry see page 36 to 40 of the Winter's Report above quoted and also Imperial Maritime Customs Decennial Reports 1893 page 670.
